Angela Lewis (@littlehipposhop on twitter), who currently runs Little Hippo Presents (on Facebook here) at Apley Farm Shop shared her plans for an arts and crafts co-operative and hub in Wolverhampton.
Based in the WV2 area of Wolverhampton the coop aims to create sustainable arts business and create cross links with the community. They will run self employment training for artists, such as business start up and benefits advice.
There will be 6 independent business units, studios, teaching spaces, a gallery area, where local artists could display their work. Large equipment will be available to hire, such as a kiln. Bespoke workshop tasters will include jewellery making and crafting.
The co-operative is planning to sell work through a web based platform. Members can also share capacity such as volunteers and bulk buying materials.
A cafe will be set up as a cooperative, and already has some volunteers.
The groups looked at building links with all schools and community groups as well as a range of other income generating ideas, such as open studio events.
The hub plans to open in April 2014 but will opening a pop-up shop in the Mander Centre from January to March 2014
Angela would like people that are interested to come along to a public meeting on Thursday 5th Dec, 6.30pm at the Lych Gate Tavern in Wolverhampton city centre (44 Queen Square, WV1 1TX). It is fully accessible and children are welcome in the meeting room.
