LGBT Network – the first Make:Shift in Action venture

Following our call for local ventures that are putting the ethos of Make:Shift into action, the LGBT Network have asked to be our first Make:Shift in Action organisation.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Network (LGBT) is a charity run by local LGB and T people and their allies to benefit local people. Services are developed in response to local need. LGBT Network Wolverhampton is a support organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people based in Wolverhampton City Centre.
LGB and T people and their allies are involved in every aspect of our organisation deciding what and how they deliver services and events.
Martha Bishop, their Coordinator tells Make:Shift that, “Currently we offer counselling, support, information and advocacy services, are a third party Hate Crime reporting Centre, offering training opportunities and workshops and survive on the good will of almost 50 volunteers.”
“During 2012 to 2013 over 50 volunteers, alongside our 1 full time member of staff and 1 project worker employed one day per week, facilitated the support of over 1200 LGBT individuals directly and over 2000 indirectly, in Wolverhampton. Over 95% of our clients have a Wolverhampton postcode. A small number work or volunteer in the city but live elsewhere.”
“In the last year service users from Wolverhampton sought advice from us about their sexuality, gender identity, Hate Crime, cultural and family issues, mental health, emotional wellbeing, benefits, debt, housing, domestic abuse in a addition to a number of practical issues that arise for these service users.”

If you would like to get involved you can find out more about the work of the Network at email them at or call them on 01902 425 092.
