Salt ‘n’ Malt

After three months of devising, filming and editing, 21 members of Wolverhampton’s Central Youth Theatre (CYT) have created a comedy short film set in a local Pennfields chip shop called “Salt ‘n’ Malt?”.

The film has been funded by the Lottery through First Light Films (the education arm of the British Film Institute) and in 2014 has the opportunity to be judged by a celebrity panel as part of the First Light Film Awards.

The young people will be premiering the film in Wolverhampton at the Lighthouse cinema in the aptly named Fryer Street at 7pm Monday 10th of June. Both the short film and a behind the scenes documentary about the creative process of making the film will be screened.

Central Youth theatre member, Kaine Zajaz says: “I was thrilled to work on a First Light Funded Film. Last year I had the chance to work on ‘Travels with Morris’ as a scriptwriter, but this year I jumped at the chance of learning how to be a boom operator on “Salt ‘n’ Malt?. I have loved seeing the filming process from a different angle, and would do it all over again”.

Pennfields Plaice Chip Shop in Stubbs Road, Pennfields kindly helped out the Youth Theatre by providing a free location for the filming which took place over two weekends in May.

The red carpet premiere is a free event open to the general public, with the screenings and a Q & A session followed by a chance for people to eat few chips covered in Salt and Malt.

Salt and Malt comes after the groups successful filming of last year when members made a series of comedy shorts with First Light funding called Travels with Morris. Today (Thursday 6th June) a group of members are off down to London to a glitzy award ceremony as these films have been shortlisted in the best screenplay category by the Limelight Film Festival. Virgin trains have kindly offered to sponsor the group with free rail fares to get them down to the award ceremony in East London. A group of twelve members will be representing the cast and crew and are hoping to scoop an award for their efforts.

Tickets for the premiers of Salt and Malt can be obtained from the Lighthouse in advance or on the door.
